Rear Disc Swap

Hi there, I just completed my 9" rebuild with disc brakes using '83 Cadilac Eldorado calipers with e-brake and '83 Lincoln Continental rotors. For all you budget minded guys this is a real sweet setup. I found the bracket kit on e-bay and found the calipers at a wrecking yard and rebuilt them myself but you can get these new also. Everything else I bought new at Napa and total cost was around $300. It sure beats the cost of what some of the big brake companies charge for their kits. Here's a few pics. I'm not sure how to create a link yet so I hope this works.

Looks sweet! What master cylinder are you going to use and are you running manual or power?

Does it change the distance from rim to rim ? Maybe a little wider tire ?? I've power brakes and can use a manual valve off the master cylinder to get the ratio right ? That looks very very nice ,I like it to much . Going to pull rear to clean up and change ratio so this would be perfect !!!

Thanks, I'm using the 4-wheel disc master from mustangs plus #1740. It bolts right in and uses the factory brake rod. Originally my car was 4-wheel drums with manual so for right now I'll keep it manual but I may consider power in the future. The main reason is that my engine has a fairly aggressive cam and does'nt produce enough vacuum.

the distance from rim to rim I would think would remain the same because the rotor mounts to the axle flange the same way your drum does. One draw back is 14" rims wont work with this set up. Maybe some will but my 14" gt rims wont. Also you would be able to adjust the brake bias with a manual valve but it takes a higher volume of fluid to make a caliper work so if you use a disc/drum master you may get a mushy peddal.

Rotors are generally thicker than drums at the axle flange area. I'm not sure about yours but the 98 mustang ones that I use are about 1/4" thick compared to the 1/16" that the drums were. Doesn't sound like much but can make a difference with rub or no rub of the tire.

I agree with Steve (I just measured this last nite for a guy!), you will gain (or lose!) about 1/4" per side due to the thickness of the rotors. Same with the Crown Vic setup.
