Building a 1967 Fairlane Super Stocker

I got this 1967 from a friend of mine. It has very little rust (front floor pans and bottom of rear quarter panels). The right rear quarter panel is bad. It had a 289 but I will be building a 390 with a C-4. I plan on using CalTrac bars and springs. The front end will have Opentracker upper and lower control arms and their new double roller spring perches. I will be painting it in my shop red white and blue (like my 69 Super Stock Mustang) using SPI products.

Welcome to the Fairlane forum Rusty!

Nice work on the 1/4. I wouldn't have thought that could be saved.

That car is coming along nicely. Huge rear tires tucked up in there too. What are the goals for the car? Track, street, both?

Lookin' good! Questions...

Howdy. I've been playing along the same lines. I wonder about the heim jointed strut bars that go from the front panel to the lower a-arms - you gonna try those? Any idea what front springs you'll run? I've got an Addco 1-1/4" and 3/4" rear bar, it's a little loose. Can't find a smaller rear bar, though. Also I've got the bar that goes across the engine compartment in front of the shock towers and I'm working on adapting a Mustang export brace that goes from the firewall to each shock tower - you have any plans there? Also wondering about reinforcing the area where the front subframe meets the main "frame" rails - do you see any way to do that?

Anyway, just things I'm working on. FWIW, Scott

To answer some of your questions. This will be race only. I will post pictures of the progress. We will be building our own subframe connectors and installing a roll cage kit from Chassis Works. We made brackets to install the front and mid plate motor mounts. I have the front adjustable strut rods from Opentracker. The tires are 10.5 x 28 but I want to run 10.5 x 30. We cut and rewelded the wheel wells for front and rear clearance. Still working on side clearance. Front springs will be Moroso.

I thought I was going to have have to replace the quarter but after a couple a days I surprised myself.

I will paint it in my shop close to the way the Mustang is painted

Nice car! NASCAR stiffness link...

FWIW I found this document on the web that shows where a NASCAR chassis flexes. I'm out to stiffen mine as much as reasonable for a street car, and it looks like I really need to see if I can keep the firewall from flexing with the Y-brace. But it looks interesting for any use. - Scott

I plan on attaching the subframe connectors to the torque box and running a bar from the subframe connector to the door sill and welding the roll cage to it.

Mike,
We have not started on the engine yet. It will be a 390 built to NHRA rules to run in SS/IA or SS/JA.

would like to see some pics of under the car on the rearend area. Did you modify alot to get those tires to fit? How close to the outside quarter skins are the tires?

The Fairlane has been put on hold (building a 68 Mustang coupe with Rod & Custom front and rear coilovers to take to local car shows and cruise nights to promote the shop). Tire clearance is a problem. Less than 1/4" between the outer wheel well and also the leaf springs with a 10" slick. I want to be able to fit 10.5 x 30 slicks like the Mustang so I still have some work ahead of me. I plan on getting a 9" narrowed a little and moving the leaf springs in for more clearance. 9" slicks will fit but I want to be able to go bigger if needed. Extra holes have been welded up in the firewall just need to be ground.
