gas tank fumes in the interior

I am smelling gas fumes in the interior of my car when I drive it. I replaced the tank while I was replacing the engine a couple of years ago. When I took the old tank out of the trunk, the trunk had some black "gunk" "painted" over the screws and lip where it sat in the trunk. When I replaced the tank, I did not paint any gunk over these screws. Do y'all think I may not have a good seal between the two halves of the tank or that fumes could be seeping through the bolt holes? What do you recommend I paint over the screws with?

I replaced all the rubber hose lines (with gas specific hoses) when I installed the engine.

The fumes are worse when I fill it up; once I am down to 1/2 a tank the fumes are not as noticable.

Thanks,

This is a late reply but i think either your vent loop line is not extending outside the car or the rubber hose that extends it outside the car is loose, compromised, or missing.

Thanks. I checked the integrity of the hoses but failed to check that the clamps were not loose. How far down should the line that comes out from underneath extend?
