How do I get speedo to function with AOD trans?
Hello. New member here with a few questions. I'll just start out with this one for now.. A few months ago I picked up a '66 500 from a member of this site. Car has a 302 with a late '80s AOD trans in it. Problem is the speedo cable and gear are tied up underneath the car, presumably because the original 3-speed cable and gear is not compatible with the newer trans. I would really like to get the speedo workingin the car (for obvious reasons.) I did a brief check, and noticed that AOD swaps are fairly common. However, I did not see any mention of people adapting the speedo. Any help is appreciated!! BTW, car originally had a Cruise-O-Matic trans (if that makes any difference.) _________________ '66 Fairlane 500 2dr "Valerie"

It should fit right in. Mine did. The only thing that you might have to do is change the gear on the end. Some of these transmissions had a different driver gear tooth number so you might have to play with that a bit. Just google your questions and something should come up. I always figure if I am asking a question, someones else has asked the same question on some forum somewhere. _________________ Steve 64 S/C big brakes 8.8 rear 289 lentech AOD, strut front suspension

Alright. If I get a chance this weekend I'll try to pop it in there. Just glancing at it though it seemed like the gear was bigger than the hole. Or maybe it was just the way I was looking at it. _________________ '66 Fairlane 500 2dr "Valerie"

UPDATE: So is there any way that someone could show me the speedo mounting location on an AOD trans? When I went under the car this morning, I discovered that what I thought was the hole for the speedo was actually the back of a round sensor with an electrical plug. Is this what I need to pull out in order to insert the old cable and gear? I was a bit surprised to find a sensor there since this trans came out of an '89, but maybe I am looking in the wrong spot. Any help is apreciated. _________________ '66 Fairlane 500 2dr "Valerie"

Yes Take out the electronic unit and your cable should slip right in. _________________ Steve 64 S/C big brakes 8.8 rear 289 lentech AOD, strut front suspension

Alright. Sweet So just as an FYI, is fluid going to come pouring out of there when I remove the plug? _________________ '66 Fairlane 500 2dr "Valerie"

Possibly some. You can jack up the car from the rear to keep the loss to a minimum. _________________ Scott

Sorry.. One more question. There is what looks like the remains of RTV on the cylinder mounted on the end of the speedo cable. I assume that is all that holds the cable and gear in the trans? And if so, is that just regular RTV, or is it something special? Thanks again _________________ '66 Fairlane 500 2dr "Valerie"

An o-ring seals the housing into the tailshaft and the speedometer cable should be retained into the speedometer gear housing by a u shaped clip.
Someone might have goobered RTV onto either one of these joints to stop a leak. _________________ Scott

Hmm.. I'll have to take a look. Maybe the clip is tied up somewhere higher on the cable. Thanks _________________ '66 Fairlane 500 2dr "Valerie"

If it wasn't for the snow outside I could go pull the gear housing out of my old Fordomatic 2 speed.
However, I removed this trans almost 5 years ago and the speedometer cable itself is long gone! But if memory serves me correctly there should be a retaining clip on it.
If you do not have the clip, you can retain it with a zip tie!
Look at the gear housing from the side. there should be 2 slots on each side 180 degrees apart. Push the cable into the housing and insert a zip tie in through one slot on one side, out through the slot on the other side and then around the housing and back through the other 2 slots.
You only need something to keep the cable inserted in the housing. _________________ Scott

Cool. I'll keep that in mind. I really want to get this done, but it's been too f-ing cold outside to mess around with it _________________ '66 Fairlane 500 2dr "Valerie"

UPDATE: I removed the electronic speedo assembly from the AOD, and swapped in the older cable unit. I also took the gear and retaining clip off of the AOD assembly, because they were both in better shape than the stock unit. And the speedo STILL doesn't work Anyone have any suggestions? I was hoping this was going to be a simple fix, but I guess I should have known better than to be optimistic. TIA. _________________ '66 Fairlane 500 2dr "Valerie"
