EFI thoughts

This came reccomened by a local Engine shop
Powerjection 3 from performance products,
He spotted it at SEMA & they let him have a unit to test, seems it worked very well, self learning although you can hook it up to a loptop & have your way with fuel maps, etc.
It lost some top end power but made up for it, 2500-4500rpm on a chebbie small block & idle, vacuum quality
Comes complete with return line, fuel pump, wide band sensor, in either matt or polished.
Odd thing, it has 4 injectors??
Seems you can drop it onto a dual plane or single plane
The computer is bult on the side of the unit, which, looks alot like a Holley,
all in for under 2K.
I;ve tried contacting Perf. products, no replies, now, maybe the holidays,
Would like to hear from anyone who has this, before i plop down the $$$. or alterantives?

all depends how savoy you are.

if you have some computer and wiring skills a megasquirt can be done cheap.

I am assuming this is on the new 347 sbf in your car?

depends what you want. that system is pretty nice for keeping a "stock" look to an enginebay. looking at it it seems it only does the fuel and no timing control. You also still need to mount a coolant temp sensor (3/8" NPT is a pretty good sized one too...might have to go in a heater line)

I have seen EFI installs with the TPS mounted under the dash and linked to the pedal that way. the MAP sensor can go under a dash pretty easy too (just run a vac line)

I think on the megasuirt builds you can set it up with a wideband to "self learn" and custom build it to your parts (GM sensors for nice weatherpack connectors?) You can install a wideband and run a program to make it self learn. you can also do a flat shift add-on (uses a switch on the clutch to activate a rev limiter while shifting) LOTS of add-ons out there for it.

I would consider something with ignition control built into it.

complete vs complete

If i wanted to source injectors, wiring, intake i would probably go to Al & Bruce's mega squirt "brains", but, i don;t want to build an EFI,
I know the Projection 3 looks to good to be true, (2 wire hook up!)
But, its a complete ,bolt on EFI system,
I;m just trying to find out how it compares to other "complete" set ups, like the Fast EFI or Massflo unit ($3600!) Holley Com.950,(no good reports!)or
Accel EFI (# 7701W)
My local speed shop swears by the Massflo unit, (no wide band sensor?) but, it is the only one he sells too!

Retrotek is the builder/designer

Look up Retrotek if you want to know what the latest version is capable of,
It has come along way since it was first introduced it to the market, at least it seems to have, & i'll be the first to admit i'm EFI limited

Take a look at Retrokek website for more tech. info on the latest "3" version, magazine right ups & dyno tests, might just be the one for me.
And, if you scroll down to "paddle shifters", they make an electronic paddle shifter, which will even shift a C-4,
Here;s the kicker - With my C-4/Gear vendor unit, What if it could be hooked up to not only electronicaly control the C-4, but the GV unit too!
Paddle shift - 1st,1st over, 2nd, 2nd over, 3rd, 3rd over & back!!
Be a poor mans electronica 6 speed auto!!!

it is easy hook up but it is also limited (no ignition timing control kinda stinks)

how hard is it to source injectors and a manifold for a SBF?

they claim it is two wire hook up so I assume that is +- power only? it still requires mounting a coolant sensor also. so no feedback for starting.... The widebands are really only needed since it is crippled.

roger I know you drive your car alot but is it a daily driver?

you could always go with a stock ford ECU/harness for a 5.0L and run a tuner on it. Easier than the MS but cost is a little higher for the tuner (I am assuming you can find a 5.0L harness from any car or truck for pretty much nothing and repin it as needed)

what heads/ports are you running? just wondeirng if a stock or aftermarket 302 lower would work for you (toss a box upper on a truck lower for some decent cheap power)

All I see out of that setup is they saved you from mounting a MAP sensor and IAT. you could even mount a AIT sensor to the aircleaner base or a tapped hole in the intake.

wiring up an EFI setup is pretty simple. just take it one injector/sensor/output at a time. A MS box takes time to build but that can be hired out if wanted. an EFI system built off alot of factory parts can be handy on a daily driver. I would rather swap out a common sensor than have to send off my "all in one unit" for repair or have to order some parts from them.

just saying SBF EFI intakes and parts are CHEAP and everywhere. if you can wire a house you can wire EFI on a car.

looking at the website they are listing it for $1600 (I guess that is about $2K for you up north?) not a bad deal but not optimum.

parts & assembly

Alot of it is time & sourcing the parts
I do like the simplicity of the Retrotek,
If you get into it, at retrotek site i;m sure one of the install/test articles manetioned that you have the ability, at least the laestest version, to mess with timing controls,
No daily driver,
Heads are aluminum heavliy reworked as the RPM;s proved to be a cork in the overall performance.
Heads are a whole other story, briefly, brand new in the box Edelbrock Alum. heads with 4 different spring rates, 3 unfinished valve seats & more!!
If i hadn;t had them checked by a pro shop, could have been ugly, so, by the time springs were changed to mutch roller cam & all the port work, i could have bought top of the line Canfields or?
Anyway, I've been talking to a Ford guru here in Toronto, he;s seems to side with your ideas, i guess i;ll take a breath here & see what alterantives are
Thanks

couple this with a decent 5.0L intake setup.
