Which electric fan would you recommend?

My 66 Convert project is coming along nicely and since it has a late model 302 with the serpentine pulley system I thought it would look a little cleaner with an electric fan instead of the old fan. What are some products that anyone else has tried and what would you recommend. I want to keep it as cool as possible since it will spend most of its time cruising.

The junkyard dog says...

...get a relay and fan out of a Mark VIII. Or buy them new. Then buy an adjustable thermostat control from Summit or Jegs.

Whatever you do, make sure you get big cfm, like 2500 or 2600 at least. You have to move plenty of air and the "bargain" fans are usually around 1,600 cfm...inadequate.

My .02 of course, your mileage may vary.

A Spal 16" pull style fan with either the medium or high power motor depending on how much clearance you have.

I've had 3 SPAL fans in 3 different cars, the pulling type, and they are all fantastic.

flex-a-lite makes some nice ones with all the controls built in for around $200, they even offer colored shrouds (including ford blue). I also have this one on my wish list, anyone know anything about the brand?

mark VII

Mark VII fans work great, but I highly recommend you check out www.dccontrol.com to look at his fan controller and possibly his fan package. Mark VII's draw huge current on startup, and can burn up relays in many instances. The controller ramps the fan speed up gradually, and only runs it as fast as it need to to keep your engine cool. You can set what temperature for it to start, and it will start at around 25% power. As your engine gets warmer, it speeds up the fan. This greatly reduces draw on your alternator and battery!

I use dual 11" Spals

I had my first real test last week and they worked great! I was on Hot Rod's Power Tour and while sitting in traffic on Rt. 18 in New Jersey around Rutgers Univ. road construction. The combo of Crite's radiator and Spal fans kept my temp at 185-190 just sitting there. I have a 2800 stall 10" converter and the trans fluid going through the radiator and aux. cooler and the trans was kept at 170-180 degrees. I like my Spal's! I'could not fit a single fan set up as the motor hub would interfere with the water pump snout. Right now my water pump snout falls between my two fans with less than 3/8" from the pump pulley bolt head and the fan body. Close but no problems. Don't invest in any single fan until you know you have room for it at the pump snout.

Cooling info

Some details on my cooling set-up.

I purchased a Howe Racing radiator with transmission cooler from Crites Restoration. Core size is 18-1/2” x 22-3/8” x 2” thick (2 - 1” tubes). I used a Spal Dual electric fan set up Part Number: 30102052 at www.spalusa.com. I used Spal’s 195 Degree Thermoswitch, Relay and Wiring Harness, Part Number: 195FH (two of them). Here is a .jpg image of the radiator, fans and home made brackets that I made from my AutoCAD drawing.

As any of you know when purchasing a Crites radiator. They will tell you factory hose fit. Well, they don't but I found some OEM Ford hoses that fit perfectly (with a small bit of trimming). I also installed dual electric fans by fabricating my own 1/8" thick aluminum brackets. I also picked up some bulbed type weather-stripping from McMaster/Carr that seals off the shroud nicely.

These are the part numbers of the hose I used.
Upper Hose: D1HZ-8260-A the Motorcraft equivalent is KM-391. Modification: 1" trimmed off both sides.
Lower Hose: C4SZ-8286-A the Motorcraft equivalent is KM-128. Modification: 3/4" trimmed off rad. side.

NAPA has these listed as their equivalent:
Upper Hose: 7696 but the picture on their website www.napaonline.com does not look like it.
Lower Hose: 7236 this picture looks really close.

I called a Motorcraft parts house locally and the D1HZ-8260-A is discontinued. I am lucky enough to have over 100 NOS/OEM hoses to select from. So some of what I have may very well be discontinued. Maybe some other parts houses can cross reference to something they have.

The lower hose had a tag on it with the above part number "Replaced by C4AZ-8286-A" so this may be available where ever you by Galaxie parts. If you have any question, please post and I'll see what I'm able to answer.

I also used the dual spal fan setup and a Griffin two row 1 1/8" tube radiator from old air products. Factory hoses fit perfect with no trimming. I broke this engine in on a 95 degree day and water temp never went over 190 degrees. came as a complete kit with mounting brackets for the fans. The kit is made for a '67-'70 mustang but I made it fit with very little modification to the radiator support itself.

fairjohn-

what kind of modifications did you have to do to the radiator support?

Thanks

Drilled 4 extra holes

2 for a self tapping screw and 2 more for the top bracket which utilizes the two original radiator support holes (J-nuts)
