Neutral or not Neutral That is the question...

With a 4spd Wide Ratio Toploader, when the shift rods are off, how can you tell if the tranny is in neutral? I am reinstalling my shifter and rods and can not tell if the tranny is in gear or not. It is in the car bolted up, but without the drive shaft or links on. If there is such a way please advise. Thanks.

I want to say that if it is in neutral, you should be able to turn the output shaft by hand (if you can reach it). I'll have to check when I get home, but if you can get under there to turn the shift posts with a wrench, I can tell you which way they go to be in neutral.

Pretty sure the front and rear ones are for 3/4 and 1/2 in that order, and the middle is reverse. If you can manually shift the gears with a wrench, the 1/2 and 3/4 you can figure out, because they have three positions, 1-n-2 (if you understand what I'm saying), so they both should be in the middle. But I don't remember which way the reverse one is to have it disengaged.

Of course, I'm sure there's someone else on here that can much more easily explain this. At any rate, I can check it out when I get home.

Ok, I'm pretty sure that if you turn the reverse shifter shaft counter clockwise, it shifts out of reverse.
