63 Fairlane engine swap
I have a 63 fairlane i'm going to do an engine swap on. it has the 170 six and a/t and i'm putting in a 289 c4. do i need different frame mounts for both engine and trans? what other cars will interchange?
It also has manual steering and would like to put closer ratio P/S on. what are my options
Thanks,
Doug in iowa

V8 mounts for 62-65 Fairlanes/Meteors will do the trick for you.
There are two options for the power steering, either you can modify the car and install a rack and pinion power steering unit or you can locate an original V8 P/S system for the 62-65 Fairlane. I don't think there are any aftermarket systems that will work with the early Fairlane. _________________ Kyle Lehrmann

There
may
be another option: Borgeson sells an integral PS gear for 1965-70 Mustangs and it may be almost plug 'n' play into a 1965 down Fairlane. The sector shaft is the same diameter so no Pitman arm issues and it would probably just be a matter of drilling/tubing different holes in the L/H frame rail (different bolt pattern between the Mustang and Fairlane OEM gears). As for the stg column, some Fairlanes used a rag joint if memory holds me correctly, otherwise go with a different column or modify what you already have.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the Mustangs use the Saginaw steering box? _________________ Kyle Lehrmann

1971-73 Mustangs/Cougars used the 800 series Saginaw gear; 1970 on down models had Ye Olde nassy linkage assist PS.
