Casting numbers

Trying to help my cousin figure out some numbers . It is a 406 and the block number read C3af -6615v it also has Hp stamped on the block as well . I know its a 63 motor and casted for a Galaxie by the a but do not know what the F stands for . I was told his by father that it was a marine block but do not know how to confirm or disprove this . It also has a set of heads C6ae-r with date castings of 6a18 . These were said to be a 428 head but I thought all 428 heads had 16 bolt holes for the exhaust . I have looked at several web sites and cannot find what I am looking for .I know this motor has been setting for over 20 years but came apart very nice and it was funny that it is a standard bore block with standard crank journals as well .

I'm not sure about the block casting number with the "f" at the end, but there never was a marine-specific FE block. You sure that's not an "E" at the end? That would be more typical of block casting numbers. Marine blocks were, when necessary, different machining operations on a production block. Besides, the casting number doesn't tell you very much anyway other than it was engineered as a Ford part in '63 by the Galaxy division, but that doesn't mean it went into a Galaxy or that it was made in '63. That's just the division assigned responsibility for the design and when the design was done.

The heads are not specific to a 428. They are garden variety FE heads and could have been on anything from a 352 to a 428, excluding the 427 and 428CJ. 428 head exhaust flanges can be drilled with 8, 14, or 16 bolts holes depending on the casting number (CJ heads were drilled for 16 bolts) and application (unibody cars got the 14-bolt pattern. Passenger car heads had the 8-bolt pattern).

You have quite a prize there in the block.

Well it will all be for sale as soon as he gets everything cleaned up . My uncle had a very large pile of Fe stuff from back in the day but had switched over to the 385 family . There is a 410 there he redone years back and only drove 500 miles then parked the truck for the winter and never got it back out . The 410 actually went into the truck that the 406 came from. I can remember seeing the ole sun tach in a 76 F250 extended cab reading 7800 in high gear as the 406 was a solid lifter motor . I have checked the numbers 3 times and it is a f . He is cleaning it up so I will see if it changes . Thanks Gerry
