Rear End swap out on '62

OK, I'm sure it's been covered here before but I can't find the perfect answer.

I have a '62 Fairlane 500 that originally had the 221 and 2 sp auto.

I have put in a 302 and 4 sp manual (Tremec T170FS SROD) out of a 1983 Mustang 5.0

What kind of car can I grab a rear end out of that would be a "bolt-in" solution? I can hit many pick-a-parts in my area and just need to know what car has a good ratio that is also the right length flange to flange.

I'm not much into racing but do a lot of highway driving . . . maybe a ration that is a good middle of the road setup.

Thanks in advance for any help from all you experts out there Smile

Is it original or did you get it out of some other car?

8.8"

Big fav. is the 8.8" out of an explorer or T-coupe or Mustang
I think the only one that;sclose to a bolt in is the Explorer, but, you gotta add spring pads
Explorer 8.8" gives you trac-lok, 3:55;s to 3:73;s & disc brakes all in one swap

early `70's Maverick or Comet 8" and`64/65 Mustang v-8 will work.
why not just change the gears in your stock 8" rear end?

If your not going to a 9 inch,it's not worth it really. You can find gears and even limited slip/posi units for the 8 inch.If you want a 9 inch,1957-1959 Ford cars are the same width, you just have to mve the spring pads.

No need to change if you are not going to a 9 inch.

8 or 8.8

Youcan certainly make an 8" live with Currie upgrades, just look at the alumi 8 center section, but
grab a T-coupe or explorer 8.8" or even a late mustang for couple of hundred & you also get
Disc brakes, trac-lok, 3:55;s or 3:73;s & a rear thats already stronger than an 8"
If the 8.8" wasn;t strong stock, they wouldn;t use em under 500 hp cobra;s & Saleens
lighter than a 9 too

You do know that the Srod is a 3 spd with overdrive and not a actual 4 spd .

Srod

So, is 4th gear an overdrive gear?
3rd would be 1 to 1?
4th is like .70 or ??
1st must be pretty low ratio?

4th OD would be ca. .67 ratio: if your motor is turning 2,000 RPM with it---------think of it spinning 3,000 RPM with a 1:1 top gear assuming the diff ratio and tire size are the same in both scenarios.
