Dyno Day

Finally got a chance to take my 66 Fairlane to the local chassis dyno. Made 3 passes and the numbers weren't as high as I'd hoped. I was gonna be happy if I hit 400RWHP but the best I got was 320RWHP at 5200rpm. We put the scope on it on the last pull and found why the numbers were down. Turns out the spark is becoming irratic atournd 5000rpm due to the spark from the Mallory Dual Point not being hot enough for the amount of compression. It'll be getting a MSD 6AL2 box soon and some more dyno pulls. Here's a video of the first pull.

Those numbers seem a little low. I would bet you can get some more out of it. What compression does this engine make? How much timing do you have in it? Is the carb adjustable? I would also recommend ditching the dual point for a stock distibutor with a pertronix set up or a aftermarket electronic dist. I do like the MSD 6al.
I am not a tuning expert but I have had many cars chassis dynoed. I have found they always make less than you hope or think you have. Can you post the dyno sheet? Did your tuner use an air/fuel gauge in the exhaust? If so what did it read? This is important to know. I have seen them just run out of fuel and not make power. What have you done to this engine? Carb, intake, heads, cam or exhaust?
Sorry about asking 40 questions.
Al

The dist is gonna stay but just as a trigger to activate the MSD 6AL2 and blaster coil. I have a pretty good idea that the ignition is my biggest problem. I've never noticed any detonation runnin on 93 octane pump gas, and I would assume I should being how sh!tty gas is these days. Couldnt throw an o2 sensor in it because they needed atleast 12" of pipe past the collector due to the excessive heat. I figure the carb is borderline lean, but it'll get taken care of when I install the 6AL2.

Here's the specs on the car:
429, 10.5:1 compression, D0VE-A heads (stock ports and valves), herbert performance solid roller cam (287/290duration .663/.680 lift .18/.20 lash), offy port-o-sonic intake, 800 Q-Jet (built), holley blue pump with 6psi at the regulator, timing is 10* inital and 32* all in at 3000rpm.

With that compression and cam specs , I think you can get some more out of it. You need to get a A/f reading, IMHO. I don't know much about a Q-jet, can you jet it if need be? Is 5200 your max RPM? Port O sonic is a single plane I think. I am sure it needs some more rpm for it to make it's power. What tourqe does it make? I am sure that cam needs more RPM's also. I bet it is just starting to make good power at 5200. I will shut up now . Can you tell I like Fairlanes and BEER. Al

We were takin it up to 6300rpm on each pull. Yes, the q-jet can be re jetted if necessary. Next time we will have an o2 sensor on it so we can get a good idea of the air/fuel ratio. By lookin at all of the parts it should be able to go 7000rpm all day long. The dyno tech also said it just started to make good power then it fell on its face. But I'll get it sorted out ove the winter months, and hopefully it'll be ready for the Hot Rod Reunion at Beech Bend in 09.

If you are not turning more than 6500 I would pitch that Port-o-sonic intake and get something else . That intake does not do much at all down low or in the midrange It is mainly a top end intake . That intake design is over 30 years old and way out dated for todays camshafts profiles .
