1969 Fairlane/Torino Exhaust Systems

Hi guys,

My tailpipe broke/rusted off right behind the passenger side muffler while on the Hot Rod Power Tour last week. It's time for a complete change.
I talked to the guys at Pypes and they informed me that all 20some sets of exhaust pipes made up for the 66-71 Fairlanes are sold out and there are no plans on making another run unless they get orders from about 25 people.
Are any of you guys aware of someone else that makes a kit? I'd like to add an X pipe or at the least an H pipe.
If I need to, I can get a set custom bent and mandrel bent pipes would be nice. No one around me is capable of mandrel bends though.
Anyone got some info or an opinion on where to look?

Thanks,

Nick

The American Thunder system from Flowmaster that is listed for '66-'67 Fairlanes is perfect fit. It is a "header-back" kit so some fabrication is required to connect the headers to the H-pipe. It includes hangers that use existing factory mounting holes.

X pipe or H pipe?

Thanks for the response.
My existing system has the tail pipes exit right behind the rear tires just like the factory did on the Montegos and Cyclones. I like that look so I'm going to see if I can pick up just the mufflers and the pipes from the crossmember back to the mufflers. I'll have to have tailpipes bent up custom since no one manufactures the factory tailpipes I desire anymore.
Pypes 66-67 Fairlane system is now obsolete but I can still buy the X pipe portion on back to the mufflers. I bet I can do the same thing with the Flowmaster H pipe.
Is there a clear-cut winner between X pipes and H pipes? Should I really stress myself about the two styles and any potential differences? What's your experience?

Thanks,

Nick

There's not a huge performance difference between the H and X-pipe, Nick. At least not in normal street driving. The biggest difference is in how the construction of an X-pipe gives you a lot of fitting room for replacement exhaust. You will probably find that even with one of the cheap Jeg's or Summit X-pipe kits, that you have enough room in fitting to not have to buy anything custom from the mufflers forward.

On the fox chassis Mustangs and Sn95 cars the X pipe has alot better sound quality .There does however seem to be more noise in the cabin area with the X pipe . On a manual trans car the exhaust tone has a very sweet sound between shifts .

Try these guys - they did factory tailpipes for me including welding them back on my original mufflers, (68 CJ) http://kepichexhaust.com/

You are lucky. I got a dual system for my '64 from them. I had several phone conversations with them, and sent them pictures from the shop manual and the Ford parts book. What I received was a bundle of crap. On one side the tailpipe exited out the back & the other off to the side. The front pipes touched the ground when they were installed. When I called them, the guy said to mark the pipes with a magic marker where they needed rebending and ship them back! I got me credit card company involved and ended up getting a call tag to retrun them and got a refund.
