Adding cubes - 302 vs. 351
I recently acquired a 68' fairlane as my newest//oldest project car. Right now it is 289 powered and running just fine, but I do want to build a more powerful engine for the car. Currently I have a worn non-roller 351 short block and GT40P heads. From what I have read the GT40P's will be a pain to find headers for so I have already posted those for sale in hopes of finding some normal GT40 heads. But what can be said about the 302 vs. 351 debate? I know I can find a complete roller block 302 for cheap on craigslist add the good heads, a stronger cam, and intake for reasonable prices. But are the extra cubes going to be worth that much more to pay for? The 351 was originally meant for a heavy grand marquis and the lighter fairlane might be able to get away with a healthy 302 and still be quite a fun car. How much would a 68' four door weigh? _________________ -Matt

There are two sayings that come to mind "if you want more inches, stroke it " and "there ain't no replacement for displacement". Basically you need to work out what sort of hp and torque you are after, then work out what it is going to cost. I personnally would go for the stroker with having the 289 in the car at the moment, but others will tell you to go for the 351, so at the end of the day it is still going to be up to you. _________________ 66 hardtop downunder

Not sure how heavy a 68 4 door is, but I'd want some torque to move it around if it was mine. I'd go for a 351 over a 302.
My $.02.

What kind of issues would I run into trying to swap in a 351?
New accessory brackets? Motor mounts? Headers? Etc. I don't have any local junkyards with a good selection of older cars to pull from. _________________ -Matt

i gotta vote for 351w stroked out to 408. Then you can build it mild up top and easily make 300HP or you can go nuts and prolly go as high as your wallet is thick. If you wanna see what parts will transfer over, get a catalog and see what parts have the same part number for 289/302 and 351. _________________ ----------------------------------------

Same motor mounts, different bell housing, as for the headers the motor is something like 3 inches wider then a 302 so check for clearances. Only other thing you need to find out is if you need a front sump or a rear sump setup with your steering. Very straight forward swap, usually no problems. _________________ 1963 Fairlane Sports Coupe Project

(1) 302's & 351's share the same bell housings.
(2) 351 has a 1" higher deck than a 302 so it is slightly wider. No fitment issues since these cars were designed to accomodate a 428 and 69's came with 351 Windsors.
(3)Front sump pan unless factory steering has been altered.

jmgford X2 - 302's, 351W's and 428's came in these cars from the factory. No need to make any chassis mods for these engines

427
the 351w will stroke to 427 with the right kit.... ain't no substitute for cubic inches... the header for a 302 might not fit in the chassis, as the 351 window sits higher.... HTH
