Bill in Legislature to require cars to get 35mpg?
Anyone heard anything about this? Heard some oldtimers gossiping the other day and they were discussing a proposed Bill that would require manufacturers to start producing vehicles that get a minimum of 35 mpg. _________________ NMCB 28 Seabee Battalion

That's the Senate proposal and all in by 2018. The House is proposing 32 mpg by 2022. They would have to become bills, then reconciled in conference. Fat chance all of that will happen. The market itself does an excellent job doing this sort of thing by itself. If it didn't, hybrids would be sitting on dealer lots, the Chrysler Smart Car would be going nowhere, and there would be no big GM project on fuel cell technology.

I only asked because I honestly don't believe that our government wants to do anything about fuel prices. They're making too much money off fuel taxes and under-the-table kickbacks. _________________ NMCB 28 Seabee Battalion

You could certainly make that argument. Fewer than one quarter of the population has any confidence that our government can do anything that they way they'll do or do it right.

I agree!
Isn't the requirement 25MPG now? Also isn't that an average of all the vehicles that the manufacturer produces and excludes trucks over a certain GVWR?
All this stuff about air pollution going on is driving me crazy. Don't get me wrong, I am all about cleaner and more fuel efficient vehicles. Can't the government go after air polluting businesses as well? Seems like the auto companies get the short end of the stick. My only guess is that the car companies are the most visual thing in the public and makes environmental people feel good about what the government is doing about air pollution and saving fuel. I just think that they need to tackle other industries too and not just go after the car makers. _________________ Red 1967 Ford Fairlane convertible with built 289, 4.11s and T5!

They only go after the car manufacturers as it is realitivally easy compared to some other industries. They just write up some legislation and make them abide by it. _________________ 66 hardtop downunder
