3 on the tree to 4 on the tree swap?

Ive heard some fellows changing there 3 on the tree to have 1st gear in R position, 2nd in first position, 3rd in 2nd position, and 4th in 3rd position. I was told the people doin the swap had other means for a reverse (one even used his choke lever with some linkage as his reverse). Anyone have any experience with this at all? Google isnt helpin much right now. BTW the tranny was a 4 speed toploader if that helps jar any memorys..

Not something I would do since I don't prefer my shifts to be hung between gears, but it's easy to do. They are just quadrants. The rods don't know whether they are shifting into a reverse gear or a 1st gear. It just moves whatever lever they are connected to. If the car has backup lights, you'll have to deal with that, but there's nothing difficult at all with doing you four on the tree.
