change the 289 engine for a 352

I have a stock fairlane hardtop 289 automatic, and there is a posibility to buy a 65 galaxie automatic with the 352 engine. It{s possible to change the galaxie engine and tranny to my fairlane?too much work to do?recomend to do it or not?
I feel the 289 is a little weak, i am not sure if the engine is weak or is a tranny problem.i have a 1967 289 fairlane 4 door w the auto tranny and it is more powerful.the difference between thew trannys is that te 1966 have a orange and green drive and the 1967 drive,2,1 both are c4?should idrive by orange or green drive on my 66?
thanks,
Joel

352?

If you do mean the old 352 Ford V-8, don;t bother.
this is not a performance engine & is not supported by the aftermarket for parts.
If you want more cubes go with a 351 Windsor for ease of install & parts.
But, you can easily make 300 hp with a built 289.
As far as your C-4, i;m assuming you mean the green dot C-4??
I have no idea what an orange C-4 is.
Any good C-4 can be built to handle 300-400 hp.

The 352 is in the FE family, is it not?

Thank you Roger for the advise. And my tranny for what a mechanic said to me is a c-4. The first drive after neutral correspond to a drive that starts in second gear and the second drive (after 1 drive) starts in 1 gear.there are no green dot.(I think in 1967 the c-4 changes the order P-R-N-D-2-1 in my 66 is P-R-N-D-D-L).
I made some questions here and internet and the 352 is aFE engine, you are correct Scott.
Thanks
Joel

Theres a lot of performance parts out their for the FE, most will work, Pistons might be the one piece hard to get for off the shelf high performance. Cams, no problem. After all its just a short stroke/small bore motor, it can be made to run. Seems the 352 & 360's always get a bad rap.

Talk to any engine builder about rodding a 352
They will tell you the best mod is weld a chain to the intake, use to hold your dock in place

Have you thought about getting a stroker kit for your 289. Some big hp can be made from the small block windsors, and they weigh less than the FE motors.

stay away from the 352, its the same as the 390. they are very heavy & the power to weight ratio is not worth it. go with a stroked 351W. this will give you power with light weight. GOOD LUCK

I had heard that it's better to get a 331 stroker kit, as opposed to the 347, mainly because it'll last longer, and you won't get near the piston slap. It seems like a good idea to me, sacrifice a few cubes to get longevity.

Small block guys are delirious. You can build an entire FE from aftermarket parts. You can make 500hp/500tq with a set of pistons, an aluminum intake and a set of headers on a 390. Add your aluminum heads and a stroker crank and you're pushing 600/600 pretty easily N/A and 445+ cubes (.030 over 390 and 4.25" crank).

One important thing when building a FE is to use a builder that is familiar with FE's as there are a few tricks you need to know.

A 352 factory bore is 4.00 and the stroke, 3.50. A 390 is 4.05 and 3.78. A 428 is 4.13 and 3.98 and a 427 is 4.23 and 3.78. You might be able to go .050 on the 352.

True, the cast iron intake weighs 80 lbs. A stock 351w weighs 525 lbs, a stock FE weighs 625 lbs... minus 80 lbs.... 2" wider, 3" longer. '66-'67's came with FE's so it's not like you're having to notch shock towers or install a MII front end.

Victor Jr SBF heads are $15 cheaper each than Performer RPM FE heads. Performer RPM Air Gap SBF intake is $70 cheaper than the Performer RPM FE intake.

Last I knew, decking a SBF block was the same price as a FE block. Turning crank, balancing, etc.. Stay away from Felpro Print-O-Seal head gaskets on FEs BTW.

All that said, staying SBF if you already have SBF will ultimately be cheaper. If you were starting out FE I'd tell you to stay FE. I think ultimately your problem might be a heavy car and a SBF that doesn't make a lot of torque. That or you have a Ford-o-matic tranny. My '63 Fairlane came stock with a 2 speed automatic.

It's sort of like Pavlov's dog, everyone hears FE and thinks it's a boat anchor because that's what they've been told.

Boat anchor, station wagon, or truck engine. You have to be a little older to appreciate the power and the potential for even the mild factory engines.

I would not swap a 352 for a 289. I'd either build the 289, a 351W, or, if you really want an FE, look for a 390.

347-yes

Trav - 347 is way to go, forget the 331, more cubes the better
the new 347 kits have dealt with any problems, & rod ratio is just not applicable,
put my 342 against Glenn;s 390. in basicaly the same car,(62 vs 63) & i;ll leave him sittin, until AFTER the 1/4 mile line, then look out, he passes me like i;m standin still, that is, until the first corner & then he has his hands full just making the turn!
If you want serious details go over to sbf.com
those guys know more about s.block & b.block builds than I or almost anyone here will ever know
