260 oil pump ?

The original oil pump in my '64's 260 finally died - luckily it happened in the driveway.

Does anyone have a part number for this part ? I am so sick of dealing with brain dead, rude, over-pierced Gen X parts clerks who say they don't stock what I know is a very common oil pump.

THANKS !!!

The part number depends on who you buy it from. I went to rockauto.com and looked it up. Comes back as: SEALED POWER Part # 22441118 This is the standard replacement pump. Even an impared counter person should be able to look up such a common part.

I forgot about this thread - I went with a Mellings high volume unit and it pegged my old black and white faced Stewart-Warner pressure gauge out !!!

The gauge goes to 80psi and the needle is past that !

I'm holding 60psi + at 55mph with an engine at operating temperature.

I noticed the typical Ford "dry knock" at startup seems to have disappeared Very Happy !

Guys, I'm ticked Evil or Very Mad ! After only 998 miles that new oil pump died and left me stranded on a lonely stretch of highway in a downpour !

Did I install the sucker wrong or do I need to go yell at O'Reilly's trained monkeys ?

I'd check the pick up tube to see if it came loose. Or the gasket between the pump and the block. Or the pump drive shaft. Pumps rarely just die. It's usually something else in the system.

Good point by Gerry Proctor. The new pump has more volumn and pressure and the pump drive shaft may be overloaded.

Typically, a high volume oil pump will put high stress on the oil pump drive shaft. If the factory one had the nylon collar, it's very weak and should be replaced with a new steel shaft with steel collar especially if using a HV oil pump.

Fords don't use the collar. The pump is located by a bushing in the block and the distributor drives the pump via a hex shaft that fits into both the pump drive and distributor drive. GM uses the collar.

H.D hex shaft

Gerry;s right and if you are using a Hi-vol. pump you should get the hi-po or hardened hex shaft
I;ve seen a stock one twisted like a pretzel.
I;d bet its the hex shaft, or your pick up fell off, before the pump would let go

Pump was locked up, shaft sheared and I'm still ticked but O'Reilly's is giving me a new pump and shaft....pan gasket and oil are on me though Evil or Very Mad .

Got the new one in and it operates quite a bit different than the previous one. Seems to fluctuate more than the previous one. Hope I ain't doing oil pump changes as regular as oil changes.

If you're referring to your aftermarket oil pressure gauge fluctuating oil pressure (typically at idle), you're noticing the actual pressure changes in the oiling system from the surging pressure of the oil in the oil pump. That's normal. If you're seeing huge swings at other than idle, you may have other problems.

In most cases you don't need a high volume pump.

If the motor has a hundred thousand miles on it then the bearings are well worn. thats when HV pump really helps, yep it will stop that dry knock on start up. But then sometimes a lifter adjustment will too.

That knock is nornally dry lifters, when I changed the lifters, cam, timming set, rockers in my 89,000 mile motor all the knock stopped.

Did not need to change the oilpump, dont fix it if it aint broke unless you are changing parts for the better.
