new cars were like acadamey awards
Who remembers when the new cars came out & it was a major event.
i can remember hitch hiking to a Ford dealer just to see the new 64 Mustang unveiling
People talked about the day the new cars were going to be released, whole families drove to dealerships to see the new Galaxies.
Then ford at least, did the 64 1/2 releases, which was a super big deal.
GM came to our town with a big tent & a huge display, with the models standing by cars on display tables.
it was like Barnum & Bailey came to town!
What happened to the days when the new cars coming out was one of the most highly anticipated events.
Is it beause they all look the same now, or do marketing guys just suck

It is probably a bit of both, they all look the same and the marketing people suck. Also add in the fact that most people know roughly what the new model looks like before it is released due to photos being psted on the net. _________________ 66 hardtop downunder

i just wish back then they would have continued to make a popular bodystyle for 6-7 years like they do now. they did that with the pickups starting in the 60's, but the cars didn't start doing that till the 80's really. could you imagine having that 64 or 66/67 bodystyle being made for 6 or 7 years?? we'd have parts everywhere, lol! _________________ NMCB 28 Seabee Battalion

Have you noticed how that billion dollar holden looks like a mitsibushi with bigger wheel arches, like the wheel arches on an european car. _________________ 66 hardtop downunder

old days
At least in the 60;s, 70;s you knew a Ford From a Chevy or Chryco.
I guess the poliferation of car companies, the world car chassis ,uinon etc, etc is why there is a sameness at least to me, of almost every new car.
Until your willing to put out 50k & up & then you start getting into some cars with character.
I know, I know cars have never been so well made
a V-6 will blow off a muscle car & get twice the gas mileage doing it.
My wife drove an audi A-6 that was one of the most amazing cars (all wheel drive) that i;ve ever driven.
But, it had no character or quirks, you know?
I;ve never worried about some stealing my 64 Ford pickup
There is a routine to starting it, 3 pumps on the gas, wait 5 seconds, turn key & hit gas 1 time.
there is some kind of personality to older cars tha is missing now
my 2 cents _________________ roger powell

Isn't that what used to make a journey some place an adventure. You didn't really know what the reliability of your car was going to be on a long trip. _________________ 66 hardtop downunder

Exciting yes, and, if the old girl did break down at least you know you could fix her!
Look under the hood of a Late Z-28.
Is it any wonder they couldn;t sell em?
Now, at least the Mustang you could see & get to the motor _________________ roger powell

I remember cruising around to all the dealerships in the area each Fall, looking in the shop windows and trying catch a glimpse of a new model.
The other cool thing was that it took skill to start a car on a sub-zero winter morning. It was really cool to be cruising down the street while the "non-car people" were on the AAA wait list because their cars were either flooded out or had dead batteries from cranking. Now any clown can turn the key and they are off and running.

new cars
The new cars dont have any soul........Even with detroit trying to reinvent the muscle car they seem to forget that just putting an old school name on a performance car and trying to call it a muscle car just doesnt work. These cars just dont have any soul

A friend bought a new Charger SRT8. It has huge power, huge brakes and huge payments. I would say it has soul. Blows away anything on 4 wheels I have ever driven. Too bad it has four doors though. _________________ Steve 64 S/C big brakes 8.8 rear 289 lentech AOD, strut front suspension

I don't mind 4 door cars at all. Now that I have three kids, I need 4 doors. I just liked the concept charger that only had 2 doors. And to Fairlaneman, go and drive one. You will be impressed.Make sure it has the big hemi. I still would take my 64 for cruising around. _________________ Steve 64 S/C big brakes 8.8 rear 289 lentech AOD, strut front suspension
