AOD swap
Has anyone used an AOD on an older (1968) 302? I have heard that some are not 'electric'. What years of car do I look for in the junkyard? What models did they come in. Do I need some type of adapter to fit the bell housing to the motor? Does the trans hump have to be modified?...Any info will help me make a decision. _________________ 1963 Fairlane 500 4 Door w/'68 J Code 302 4V and FMX

I did it on my 62. You will need to fab a trans mount. my AOD was out of a 89 T-Bird. The tunnel is tight but it fit

I have an AOD on the back of my 65 289. Tight fit. Bolted right on. You have to use a 351 flexplate with 164 teeth (?) to get the proper balance.I had to get a shorter driveshaft because my tranny came from a Lincoln that has a longer tailshaft. Try to get one from a Mustang or T-bird/ Cougar. They are closer to the stock c4 length. _________________ Steve 64 S/C big brakes 8.8 rear 289 lentech AOD, strut front suspension

AOD -yawn
Should mention that you want to do some stuff to that stock AOD before install
Believe me, you won;t be happy with a stock soft, granny shifting ol AOD
Might as well get a valve body or at least a shift kit before install
You WILL get bored of a stock AOD shifting in about 2 days! _________________ roger powell

Great info guys! Thanks. It made me really appreciate my FMX. The gas mileage would be great but thats a lot of time and money. More than I was ready to spend. _________________ 1963 Fairlane 500 4 Door w/'68 J Code 302 4V and FMX

I have a article from an Aussie magazine on fitting the AOD to a '67 Ranchero that I can email you if required. Just send me a PM with your email address if you would like a copy. _________________ Experience is a wonderful thing. It enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again

Good point there. Although since older Fairlanes are light cars (ca. 3,000 lbs); you may be better off swapping in a 2:60 pig from a 1970's Mustang II or similar vehicle especially factoring in that you probably have no more than P195/75R14 tires now

AOD in a '69
i've got an early 80's AOD in my 69 Merc behind a 302. one of the best swaps i've ever done. trans core was free. with the rebuild, driveshaft shortening, yoke, silverfox valvebody, lokar parts, and other misc items, it cost me about 1200 bucks max. i've got pictures if you're interested.
after a gear swap to 3.70:1, the acceleration is awesome. getting rid of the FMX made long trips so much more enjoyable. mileage went from about 17 to low 20's and that includes changing from 3.00:1 to 3.70:1 gears too.

Thats the swap I want! But even $1200.00 plus another 3 to 4 hundred into the rear end....Too pricey at this point. I replaced the engine and trans for less than $1000.00. The donor car cost me $200.00, short block $490.00, Heads rebuilt for the price of new parts. (Got lucky with that one.) The high school auto shop dropped 'er in.... _________________ 1963 Fairlane 500 4 Door w/'68 J Code 302 4V and FMX
