Shocking Question!

I put my 63 back together (stock) but removed the Air shocks someone had installed before. I bought a new set of KYB gas adjust shocks for my car and now they come up about a 1/2" from fitting. I cannot get the nut on at the top. I have the tube pointing down with the fat part of the shock at the top. How do I get them to fit? What am I doing wrong? I did put on 2" over ride height leaf springs, would that affect the shocks?

There used to be a thing called shock extenders that you could buy. They were used when you had lift shackles or in your case, higher arched springs. They screw on the end of the shock with a female thread and have a male thread at the other end. Should solve your problem.

You dont need extenders!

Just put some weight in the back untilt he rear comes down, my son 150lbs did the tops while I did the bootms of the rear shocks. same KYBs you have!!!

Shock extenders will break!!

Springs should settle...

You might try waiting a bit if you can, maybe drive up and down the driveway a little or whatever with no shocks. The springs should settle down on their own about an inch or more in a week or two on their own. It's funny, but mine did without any lift.

I'd worry a little about pulling on the shocks after the load in the trunk was removed, but if you left it there for a while... Maybe put some tools or whatever to get the car low enough for the shocks to fit and then leave the stuff there for a few weeks?

Or shorter rear shackles, or maybe small lowering blocks?

FWIW, Scott

I may have figured out my problem. When I put the 2" over stock ride height leafsprings on the car the rear shackles pulled all the way up. Once I get a crow bar or come along and pull them back down maybe the shocks will fit correctly. Could that be it?

Shackles must be at an angle!

Howdy. The shackles must be angled for them to work, if they are straight you might have problems. I think angled back is what's required. Maybe longer shackles? - Scott

length

I;m running the KYB's too
No problems bolting them in ,they reached the top holes no problem
Are you sure you;ve got correct shocks?
Mind you, i;ve got Eaton 2" lowered springs, maybe that helped
My shackles are angled, i don;t think they should be straight,on the vertical
At least, i;ve never seen em like that, but, i;m no suspension expert
