The easy way is to try to get a deep well socket on the bottom bolt of the housing. If the socket won't go, then it's a 9. The pinion support gets in the way of the socket. An 8" will easily fit a deep well on the bottom bolt.
As to how to tell if it's a limited slip (Posi or Positraciton is a GM term. Ford used Equalock and TractionLoc) if it's just the housing, you can look at the case. If it is scalloped where the ring gear bolt heads sit, then it's a limited slip. For an assembled unit, rotate the axle and have someone watch the opposite axle. If it spins in the same direction, then it is likely a limited slip. If it turn counter direction then it is likely an open differential. But a worn open and behave like a limited slip and a worn limited slip can behave like an open.
And if the rear tag is still attached to one of the bolts on the housing, you can decode it to determine the type and gear ratio.
