blower/fan problems on our 03 taurus
my wife's 2003 taurus has alittle problem. the blower or fan that blows the air out the vents only works on high. it has four levels like most vehicles, but none of them blow air except the highest setting. is there a switch behind the control panel that i can replace to fix this? it's a pain in the rear, because if the a.c. is on you can't feel it unless you turn it wide open, then you freeze really quickly. she's constantly having to turn it on and off and I'M CONSTANTLY HEARING ABOUT IT! any help appreciated. _________________ NMCB 28 Seabee Battalion

Most likely it's the fan speed selector. It will be connected to the knob itself. There are two circuits in the switch. Usually the first three fan speeds are controlled by the low speed function. The second circuit, which is also in the switch, controls the high speed (or full-on) function through a high capacity resistor that gets its power from a direct source. It's a good thing that you have the high speed function since that wouldn't likely be fixed by replacing the selector switch and you'd have to go into the dash.
It's probably not too difficult to replace the selector. Picking up a new one from the dealer will probably give you an intuitive guide as to what you need to do to replace it. I don't know anything about this particular car but if it's like most Ford products, the switch is pretty easy to get to. Most just pop out.

Resistor block
Although it could be the selector, it is more likely the resistor block located in the plenum that controls the voltage going to the motor. These fail all the time. Look in the service manual, or look under the dash for a plug in the plenum. it could be in the engine compartment also, depending on the year... HTH
PS..
shoulda read gerry's entire post, i guess... they may not do it the way i outlined anymore... On my '02 sporttrac, that fan switch is always warm....

I'm a Ford tech at a dealer here in central Va. I have seen this many times and Ford has a TSB on this problem. The blower resistor is bad. It mounts on the front of the heater case. Easy to access just have to pull down the glove box. This is where the TSB comes into play. Most likely the resistor will be rusted from a water leak. The area underneath the cowl where your cabin filter mounts leaks water where the heater box comes throug the body. The TSB has a part number for a rain hat to put over your filter, sealer to seal the box to the body, a new resistor and usually have to replace the blower motr also due to water damage. Check it out and see if the resistor is rusted if so thats your problem.
