460 engine swap
not real familiar with the 460 dimensions, I think I've read somewhere it shares the same characteristics as the 428, if so, a car that could have been equiped with a 428 should take the 460...right? any known headaches, this is my future build as my 70 fairlane currently sports a 302, and I want to go big block and the 460 is still fairly inexpensive and attainable. Whats the best auto tranny to go with this? I plan on running at least something in the 3:90 gear ratio area. Basically, I want to go into the tire shredding buisness...2 at a time!!!

The '70 Fairlane should be able to use factory parts for a 460 swap, the Torino had the 429 which is the same 385 series engine.

for 70, ford shaped the firewall to handle the higher bell that bolts to the 385 series engines. if you compare an fe bell to a 385 series bell, you'll notice how much taller the 385 series bellhousings are. for me to put a 429/460 in my 1968 and 1969 cars, i either have to massage the firewall a couple inches or buy the crites parts.
your car has the clearance for the 385 series already so it is a matter of getting the right frame mounts, order up stock 1970 big block engine mounts and that engine will bolt right in.

Not sure what heads you're going to run, but some aftermarket heads can cause real headaches with your swap. Specifically, Blue Thunder aluminum heads with chebby exhaust and similar heads (think Trick Flow has something similar) where the exhaust port is actually about 1/2" closer to the shock tower. Believe me, that 1/2" makes a world if difference when you're trying to make headers fit in an already tight engine compartment...

I am in the process of doing this....into a 70, Torino
First, my lincoln motor needed different mounts., then the C-6 tailhousing may be different. need shorter housing. Then the Hooker 6115 headers do not fit.
Stay tuned for more
