fuel gauge problems

Ok, this should be fairly simple, but I though I'd see what others thought about it. I have a '64 sedan. The fuel gauge quit working some time ago, and I started using the odometer (I also ride motorcycles) The gauge is stuck on full. Now I'm going to have to replace the fuel gauge sending unit, because it has a minor leak where the metal fuel line comes through the backing plate. I'm assuming it is supposed to be welded. How much of a job should I expect this to be on a 50 year old car? Is it likely to damage the tank trying to remove the retaining ring? Are there any tricks to it that might make it easier?

Working on this car has sometimes been a real pain, because I do not have a manual. I do have most of a supplement for the '64, it appears the main manual was written for the '62-'63, and only the changes for '64 are in the supplement. Anybody know where to get a full manual?

EDIT: I just found and ordered a manual from eBay.
