What rear end is in my 64?
What rear end is in my 64 Fairlane 500?
It was a 6 cylinder auto car?
It looks like a 9 inch but I don't know. It has 2 dimples with the filler hole in the rear of it just like a 9 inch for that era would have. _________________ David Alger

if it has never been changed out, it is a 8" rear.
check out http://www.kevinstang.com/Ninecase.htm for the differences between 8" and 9" _________________ John P

8" longevity
Just a hint- If your making 200-300hp your stock 8" will live, & with mods avail. from Currie enterprizes you can make that little 8" live to 350 + hp.
I kept my stock 63;s 8" up to 400hp (347 stroker-455hp/412t.lbs) & it held together until I started stupid launches, (foot breaking, but the final kill - a big tire for traction killed it) _________________ roger powell

Just curious, what is it usually that breaks down in a smaller rearend when it goes? I've never torn a backend up. Is it the ring gear? Side gears? splines? _________________ NMCB 28 Seabee Battalion

breakage
In my case, axles, The last, Bear axles, 28 spline, but, hardened, held up & are still good as far as I know, switched out the 8" for an Explorer 8.8" a # of years ago. _________________ roger powell

I'm going to have a 428 in it with a 5 speed.
Don't think I'm going to takeany chances with the 8". _________________ David Alger

Pinion, spiders, carrier most commonly.
Axles are the same as a standard 9", 20 splines. _________________ Scott

Yes. Too much torque (Torque breaks parts, not HP) and the 5 speed will shred it if you make hard launches with a sticky tire. _________________ Scott
