Cracks related to torque box?
This goes back a lot of years. I'm pretty sure I read it on this board. I have cracks on the passenger side, top of the quarter panel, leading away from the back window. I seem to recall this was due to flexing when the torque boxes were weak. Can someone confirm or refute this. I'd appreciate as these cracks are a glaring flaw in an otherwise great car.
Thanks in advance

It has to do with the unibody rigidity under high torque loading with a good chassis setup. You must be making some awesome power and have great traction. This is normally cured minimally with good, tight-fitting subframe connectors or, at the higher end; a six-point cage. It's not a Fairlane-unique problem, though. It first shows up as a wave or ripple in the quarter panel.

Cracks
Gerry, Thanks for confirming. The 460 is making some serious power. Front and rear suspensions were set up for max traction and cornering capability. Sounds like subframe connectors are the route. I'll find a shop that is capable to repairing the cracks and welding in the subframes. I can't do any serious work when it involves cutting and welding. _________________ Martin Farber
