transmission questions

I have a '64 with a 2 speed Ford-O-Matic, which was rebuilt by a local shop a couple of years ago. I am wanting to change the fluid and filter. The shop that rebuilt it is no longer there, so I have no idea what they put in it. The owners manual calls for "Type A Suffix A" which I can get, but I doubt that is what the transmission shop put in it. It looks like plain old DexronIII/Mercon. The Type A is thicker and not as red. I can tell for sure when I drop the pan. If it is Mercon as I believe, is that what I should put back in it? it has run fine since being rebuilt, but on the other hand, I have had a number of old Fords that called for Type A, and that is what I put in them, they ran fine too.

Second question is, where can I get a filter? none of the auto parts places have them, and neither do places like Mac's and Dearborn Classics. Is the filter cleanable? The service manual says to replace it. Thanks, Jerry.

I ran type F fluid through mine.....the filter was a serviceable item. Here is a link that explains.......http://falconfaq.dyndns.org/AT/FM2/FM2.html

Hope it helps...I ditched my "Slip-o-Matic" when I went with a 302.....
