Headliner replacement

The original headliner in my 64 fairlane was torn etc so I removed it. Has anyone ever bought and tried to install a new one for the first time or is it money well spent to pay a shop? Any how to videos? thanks

I did mine. First one I ever did and I would never do it again. It never looks good. I will be getting it done by a shop when I change it again

it's difficult but doable for a first timer

look up videos on youtube.
get the dapper contact spray glue, most upholstery shops will have it.
if you have a coupe or sedan get the headliner for ebay about 60.00
to properly do this you must make sure all your windlacing is done first, then the headliner is tucked into the teeth above it, this is the hard part.
have a friend help. I started from the rear and went forward.
you should remove the windshield rubber for best results.
If you get a quote for less than 200.00 to have it done pay it! even 300.00.
I did a wagon and I think it's OK, but a wagon has got about 4 ft more headliner than a coupe.

My '64 headliner also fell apart. After getting a $1000+ quote from a shop to replace it, I removed it, cleaned up the metal as much as possible, and painted it. Ford put the front and rear window seals on over the headliner, which seriously complicates things. Over the past 50 years, mine have dried out, shrunk, and cracked at the corners, leaving large gaps for water to get through. I filled these gaps with black silicone, they look much better, and are now waterproof. I don't even know if you can get new seals. I don't know how the shop planned to do it, I left when I heard the price. This is a daily driver car, not a showpiece.

Thanks pals for helping me understand more about this . No way will I remove the window glass to get this thing in .It doesn't have to be perfect. Just good enough so it doesn't draw attention as being a sloppy job.

I just saw this thread and the post from the guy in Chandler saying he got a quote for $1000 to do the headliner. That quote is asinine, it cost me maybe a couple hundred bucks. My whole interior, including seat upholstery, headliner, and carpet was about $1200 in labor (I bought all the material over the internet). I had it done right here in town at Customer's Own Fabric, which is now located on Alma School Road. (And that included paying a glass guy to remove and reinstall the rear window).

headliner how to

also, there is a good how to in a back issue of the Fairlaner magazine
maybe in the archives, not sure
When i did mine i made the mistake of having the rods or headliner bows in the wrong order, once i looked it up & realized the bows had to go a certain way, they are color coded, it wasn;t easy, but douable
I;d give it a skill # of a 8 out of 10 for Skill level tho
