my 62 Daily Driver project

Well I didn't have a thread with the latest work on the car.

I bought this car in 2001 after I totaled my Turbocoupe. I drove it through college and put about 40K on it over 4-5 years. Once I finally made it out of school I parked it and hadn't done much with it. I took on the road for a year for work so it just sat in storage until 2008 when I bought a house finally. I rolled it off the U-Haul trailer into the garage where it has been sitting since.

I sold the Turbo 200/T5 combo off as while on the road for work I picked up an Austrailan 250 Cross flow motor



I needed new strut rod mounts which I ordered from Crites a couple years ago. I have those installed now with a new full battery apron.

I dropped the motor in for a test fit to see how it was going to do.



Ended up ditching the clutch fan. and the factory EFI intake (well most of it)



intake still needs alittle work on it. I need to shave the rib on the shock tower and the plenum needs a notch for the hydroboost unit (it has been shifted over towards the motor about 1.5" for the master to mostly clear the shock tower)

I have a T5 bellhousing for this motor and right now looks like I will be putting a 2.95 NWC T5 behind it. this weekend I am working on finding a location for the turbo (.57 trim turbonetics t3/t4) and wastegate (TiAl 38MM)

Right now I am leaving the suspension stock (except for a borgeson integral power steering box for a mustang and drop coils) Brakes will be ?SN95 discs up front (11.5" rotors) I am using a modified fox chassis 200 inline six power steering brackets with a 87-88 turbocoupe power steering pump (uses a remote res) I will prob be upgrading to a 3G ford alternator and a Sanden 708 ac compressor (have a underdash ford unit for it)

managed to get a jig made up to locate the turbo for welding up the header. I should have the flanges cut frmo the shop next week and my SS bits showing up then too. Ordered my megasquirt this evening (promo was going for 18% off)

intake will be finished by the end of september from my welder (he is going to be on vacation for a couple weeks)

I need to have a radaitor made up for the car but have already mocked up the space needed so I should be ready to fire once I get it wired up and finish the fab on the motor.

started in on the header this evening. need to make a run for some PVC for laying out the rest of it (SS pipe is a little pricey to play with)



I also almost am done building my megasquirt3 board. Intake was dropped off to get finished welding this morning and should be done in a couple weeks. hoping to get this thing fired up this fall still.

fiddled with the header a little over the weekend and some tonight. Kinda stole some of an idea from SSheaders.com in using PVC. on #3 you can see a section I was fitting. I just cut it using a hacksaw, die grinder (with non-ferrous cutter) and a coarse 3" rol-lok disc. I think wrap it in paper and trace the same out and cut out it. then I wrap the pattern around my bulk pipe and trace it out. then I just use the plasma, angle grinder and die grinder to cut it out and final fit it to the spot it needs to fit in.





that last 90 that turns up I just tacked on to get a feel for it. the angle the 90 is rolled back will depend on the merge I build under the turbo flange and also needs spaced out from the motor some (just didn't feel like getting that far on it yet)

Well I got bored tonight and kinda had set the goal of having a header by the end of the weekend....



Got most of the rest of it fit up tonight. I need a short piece on #5 still but can really get most the rest of the header done before I fit and weld it in. Just as a warning my welds look like crap right now. I am not back purging, using too small of a filler rod (1/16" and really should have grabbed 1/8"), using the wrong shield gas (I had just filled my tank not too long ago with regular CO2 mix and really shoudl have a tri-mix gas) and I am using a $200 Harbor Freight TIG (just a single knob for current control....no foot pedal.....and scratch start....contaminats the tungsten like no tomorrow) I am just getting root passes in for now and will have to run over them next week with a heavier rod (since I doubt TSC carries SS filler rod in Dayton)

made some more progress tonight. I need to finish up the collector area and do a little more grinding and blending but by the end of the weekend I should be there. I think before I weld the flanges on I will bolt them to my stock iron manifold and run a drill through them all to make sure they are lined up adn bolt it to the head and go to town welding it.

ordered some parts up a week or two ago...

some 3" drop coils from Dearborn
Shock tower brace and lower brace from Crites. I went with a "T5 tunnel hump" but they couldn't tell me if it was for a S10 T5 for a mustang T5 so we will see.

I got bored and started on my AC stuff. I had picked up this underdash unit over the summer and it had no mounts. so I fabbed up a nice beefy front mount for it this weekend and started cleaning up the case for it to reassemble (makes getting in and out form under the dasg MUCH easier)

Tomorrow I am going to go look at a NIB rechromed rear bumper I found local for cheap.

messed with my truck most of this fall trying to get it running right (which it still isn't)

figured the car needed a little love so I did this over the afternoon...



Started out as a Crites brace. replaced the firewall piece with a wider section so I could clear the master cylinder. I then added a brace between the shock towers. I might add a gusset between the plate on the shock tower and the brace to take the stress off the mitered joint.

I also cgrabbed a lower brace but I am not sure I am going to use it yet.

Tell me, what was the apppeal that made you go with that 6 banger

bolts in on stock mounts, "cheap" and different.

would be alot simpler if I skipped the turbo, pb, ps and ac....

trying to figure out a radiator right now. looking like a custom crossflow unit....or a corvette one.

doing a little repair on the passenger side rocker/torque box. have some new front floors to put in once I get the boxes finished up.
