Best "inexpensive" clutch for 66 Fairlane GT w 390
Howdy, all. Have not posted for a while. Searched on this back in the forums with no joy.
The clutch in my 66 Fairlane GT with a 390 is for a 3 spd manual and open 3.55 rear is dying and badly needs replacement. I've looked around, probably too much, and can not afford the McLeod 12" unit or the Centreforce setup. Basically I'm trying to keep the part under about $350. Car has an Edelbrock RPM and a Comp 270H,and HP is around 360 with torque at maybe 440. Runs 14.8 at 95mph at the track. Many of the clutches I've looked at don't seem able to handle this. I believe the 3.03 transmission has a 1-1/16" ID X 10T setup.
So here are the choices I've found. I did not include the Centerforce types 'cause it seems too many mods are required to the bellhousing, etc. and/or are too pricey. Advice appreciated!
1. RockAuto has a Brute Power Part # 90206 12" Clutch; Lever (Long?) for only $142 - seems too good to be true.
2. Summit also has a diaphragm McLeod 75112 that might be affordable at $350.
3. ebay has a Mustang SPEC 351/390 Stage 2 Clutch Kit 1968-1973 for $310 (120670758770) said good for 520 ft lbs. Unsure about input configuration.
4. ebay also has a 1967 - 82 Ford F150 F250 F350 8 Cyl Stage 3 Clutch Kit by Phoenix Friction (140511410044) at only $200. The seller seems responsive, but this sorta looks too good to be true.
6. RAM has a 98769 Powergrip clutch set Ford long style 11 x 1 1/16-10 $315
7. Zoom has a long type HP7350-1 for around $300 that uses some kevlar.
I think the McLeod 75112 looks best, but the kevlar in the Zoom looks like it might be good. But what do I know?
Anyway, out of all this I'm terminally confused. I really don't want to have the tranny dropped and find out my fancy replacement clutch won't fit!
I'd really appreciate help on a $300ish solid clutch that will fit and last.
Thanks, Scott _________________ 66 Fairlane GT

Clutch
Scott,
Knowing how you use your Fairlane I think you'd be happy with this Zoom clutch kit. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ZZZ-30003 I used it until I bought my Ramettalic clutch. _________________ Doug Bender

I had problems with a Zoom not holding and Spec clutches have a very heavy pedal .I had one stage 3 in a 66 Galaxie 429 car and currently have one in a Fairmont small block single turbo car . They have tremendous holding power but not traffic bound friendly . I put a Centerforce Df in my 66 Gt and love the soft pedal and holding power for a natural aspirated vehicle I would not run anything else .Turbo, supercharged or Nitrous would only be a Spec . _________________ 1966 Gt , Tahoe Turquoise , 35143 miles
