Fuel Sending Unit and Fuel Gauge 1963 Ford Fairlane

My fuel gauge works well (i.e. when you fill it up, it goes up, as it gets empty the gauge goes down), but the tank is empty when the gauge registers 1/4 tank left. Is there any way to adjust the system? Or do you just have to replace parts? Which would need to be replaced, the gauge or the sending unit?

Thanks in advance,
J

Has anything been done to the tank or fuel sending unit?

Thanks for the replies... The Mustang article looks good, I'll try to troubleshoot it. The tank has been messed with: It was changed from a metal to a fiberglass tank.

Different light

Different tank puts a different light on the problem. Could be that the float is botteming out at the 1/4 point or you have a sending unit and tank that are no compatable.

Check the grounds to the sending unit.

This was exactly what I was thinking when I asked about the tank. Its possible that new tank is mold a bit different inside, or the sending unit was installed twisted so that it hangs up. Another possibility is that the sending unit which is supposed to ground to the tank doesn't because of the fiberglass tank.
