289 crank in a 302?
I recently purchased 2 1965 Fairlane 500 hardtops with one being a sports coupe. It was the best $1000 I ever spent.
The "C" code on the vin tag made me start doing some research because the car had a 4 barrel carb with cast iron intake. The intake casting number shows that it is from a 1968 Mustang 302.
So I go back to the elderly gentleman I bought the cars from and he said he blew up the 289 years ago and had a 302 installed by an engine shop.
But he also said that it had the 289 crank in it.
So my question is this:
Is there any major differences or problems that you guys can think of with this combination? I'm new to mix-n-match so I'm not really sure what problems this may cause.
thanks in advance for any help.

The 289 crank will interchange just fine, no issues, but the 289 rods would be required as well.
This makes the engine a 289 in a later 302 block.
Both engines use the same bore, deck height, piston, front cover etc.
The only differences between the 302 & 289 is the stroke and rod length.
The 289 shared the same crank as the 260 & I believe the 221.
Only the bore changed between these engines. _________________ Scott

289 cranck in a 302 block
mygirls63, thanks for the reply.
I guess I'll just have to pull the engine and start looking at codes on the parts to see what they have done. It's running so it must be configured as you stated
Thanks.

Numbers of interest to you:
289 crankshaft will have 1M stamped or cast into it.
302 casting # is 2M.
Look on the block for the engineering number and that will give you alot of information on the block.
There are other places to look, but to find out what the stroke & crank is will be the important information.
Good luck. _________________ Scott

obviously yours is OK.The 302 specific piston is a shorter skirt to accomodate the longer stroke so a 302 will work in a 289 but not a 289 in a 302.I think most if not all aftermarket pistons are short skirt to work in either one.
