"change L-4" ???
anyone ever heard of this?
Alternativly, you could try to find an early 5 bolt 289 block which you could then fill with 302 goodies. The tipoff to spoting one in a boneyard is that they came with generators. If the suspect has an alternator as original equipment, its a 6 bolt. In parts books this is known as "change L-4."

A 302 is a stroked 289.The crank of course is the big diffrence but the rods are shorter and the pistons have shorter skirts to clear the crank throws.I think most aftermarket pistons nowadays are the short skirt and will work in either engine but some are 289 specific.

As far as the guts are concerned, yes, that's true. But the 302 block is in fact different. Ford felt the piston stability could be improved by adding a wee bit of length to the bottom of the cylinder and thus, the blocks are different between a 289 and a 302. It's not that you can't make a 289 into a 302, but that's not how it was done by FoMoCo.

karkev may be better off taking his 5 bolt 289 out and stashing it away. 302's are a dime a dozen (Ford the same basic longblock all the way to 2001 in the Explorer) which would necessitate a 6 bolt bell but still.............

Yea,Ford no doubt made some changes to support the added displacement and also fixing issues found from production.I have seen some books from Ford in the Total Performance era that had different combos and engine mods for the smallblocks. One of them was detailing how to stroke a 351W to 400ci with the 400(335 series) crank. One of them was stroking a 260 and a 289 with the 302 crank.
