My next project: another 66

This is a C code car that I've started disassembling to clean up and restore. Some of you will probably look at it and think it's not worth the time, but this car was GIVEN to me by a farmer about 3 years ago who had it tucked away under a cedar tree in his hay pasture, All I had to do was go pick it up. It has sat there since 81. I've been pouring burnt oil over it all this time, until a few months ago when I decided I was going to start on it. It has plenty of surface rust, but the frame rails are solid everywhere; that was the #1 most important feature to me, because I got into a ton of framerail repair/replacement on the car in my avatar, and never want to fix another one that bad off again. Even the torque boxes are solid, with not even any pinholes. It needs some front floorpan repair in some flat areas, but the toeboards and rear pans are fine. My biggest worry with the car is the right quarterpanel, the farmer used the bucket on his tractor to shove the car out of the way years ago.

Although they have typical surface rust, all of the frame rails appear very solid. I beat on them pretty harshly with a welding hammer, and didn't punch through anywhere.

They battery area has a corner rusted out, which is pretty common. Isn't this area available in the catalogs?

The drain rail area around the trunk is solid everywhere except at the bottom. That bottom piece is actually spotted on, so I'll remove it and replace it with a donor from a parts car.

This is the spot I'm dreading. The farmer said he used the corner of his bucket on his tractor to push the car over alittle, and you can see what it did to this quarter. I'll try to port-a-power it back out, but I'm not really sure what to push off from, other than the humped pans in the trunk. This'll definitely be a nightmare, and the most challenging bodywork I've tried.

This is another challenge I'm not sure how to do. After taking the cowl off, the corners underneath the windshield are eaten through. Obviously the only thing I can do is cut out the area around the hole and fabricate new metal to weld back in. That's way too bad to try to just fiberglass. The first side (driver's side) is the worst.

driver's side

passenger's side

Thanks, I may end up calling you. Wink

I know it's a pretty good project, but it was a FREE car, and Fairlanes aren't as common to find as Mustangs, especially 2 door hardtops. I could live with having to replace sheetmetal, but I wasn't going to fool with another car that had alot of framerail damage. This car is really sound in the rails, like I said even the torque boxes are solid.

I'll probably do like you said and take the top off that cowl area, once I get the windshield out. As typical, the fresh air top hats need replacing anyways, so that will make it easy to get down in there.
