1964 F-Lane 54A body 15,069 miles?

This is the car my wife and I were given by her great aunt. Keep in mind if has been sitting in a driveway for the past 11 years sunning itself in the desert. So far the only parts I have not been able to find in the trunk or back seat are the rear script, bumper jack, keys, and the front drivers parking lamp lens. Since we picked it up 2 weeks ago I have pulled the dry rotted/wet carpet out and pressure washed the engine compartment/car. I know it has a 289/C4 with a 8 inch rear axle. In the link you'll find pictures of the odometer which indicates 15,069 miles. At first I thought it was 115,000 miles but I am finding things on the car to suggest otherwise. For instance; the real leaf springs have the rubber isolators between each leaf spring at the U-bolts and the ends still have them as well, the valve covers still have the staples holding the gaskets on, all the tags are still attaches to engine parts and the date codes match on the engine for a mid Oct 63 build. I know that at some point someone swapped the generator over to an Alt but left the original gen harness and reg attached to the firewall. The car interior is to say the least "dry" and all the window seals have shrunken like a head held by a witch doctor. Is there anything else I need to look for to confirm this?

Photo's I posted aren't working... http://picasaweb.google.com/mark.covill/1964FordFairlane

Don't mind the wheels, a friend of mine loaned his 67 cougar wheels to me so I could get it on a trailer. Dry rotted flat flat tires don't roll too well.

I'm going to guess the mileage is 115,000 simply because it's doubtful the generator would have needed to have been swapped out at 15,000.

Also, the vinyl and cloth used by Ford circa 1964 was iron-tough and looked new well into the 150k mileage.

My own '64's grey cloth inserts looked good as late as 1996 (circa 200k). Matter of fact, the red vinyl in mine is so solid it is still in use even after my seamstress ripped out the cloth inserts and sewed new white vinyl inserts into the vintage red back in 1996.

"Petey" looks really good for his age. It will be a great project! PLEASE keep the Petey markings, and also have "Bicth" pinstripped or airbrushed back on after you get it painted, I love it! The car has a lot of character.

Cool! Our Fairlanes are close cousins, same color, a/c, only mine is a 500. I'm betting on the 115,000 miles, the sun can be brutal, but the car has been used alot. Great to see another getting put back on the road, and your wife looks happy! Even made my day more when I saw you were working on it and took some of the pics on my birthday, 2/3. Also noticed the right front fenders paint was faded more than the rest of the car. Mine was the same way as well as the hood. I got lucky back in '91 and bought a parts car that was the same color just to get a hood with original paint, since then it has been damaged almost beyond repair. Well this thread is about your Fairlane. Good luck with the project! 69cobra

Well the town lore concerning the car is that the original owner didn't drive the thing outside the town limits, 15 square miles, since he bought it new. Regaurdless of actual miles verse flipping the odometer my wife does love the car.

I've dropped the gas tank this week and found another gas cap resting on top after it was dropped some years ago. I'm guessing that loosening the two J bolts and lowering the tank was not an option when it happened. Anyways the tank was filled with 1/2 gallon of dehydrated fuel that has turned to varnish inside and stinks to high heaven. I loosened what I thought was a drain plug on the bottom of the tank to find out there were no threads, only sealant holding it. The sending unit pick up screen is a black gel magnet. You can bet the tank will be going to a radiator shop to get a thorough flushing and seal that square head plug back in the bottom. I've found a guy on evilbay that sells new pick up screens and gaskets for the sending unit if it checks out with an ohms meter. Otherwise I'll be looking to buy a new one.

The engine block has a 5 bolt bellhousing pattern as far as I can tell. I've only been able to locate 5 so far. The engine turns over by hand smoothly until the compression kicks in. So I don't think I will be tearing it out unless I have too after I start it. The engine mounts are questionable so those will be changed along with the trans mount.
